Spend Your Life Helping Others

This story begins when I did fieldwork practice at a hospital in Pacitan. At that time we were placed in the emergency department. Everything was going, as usual, that afternoon until suddenly…..

Some people entered the emergency room carrying a man in their arms. The man looked unconscious with wet clothes and body. It turned out that there were two people who were carried by those people in the same condition.

“help, they both drowned on the beach!!’’ Shouted a woman. Of course, we and the senior nurses immediately directed the guys to take the two unconscious men to the red triage room. For your information, the emergency unit in the hospitals has 3 triages, green triage, yellow and red triage. Patients in the green triage generally experience minor injuries and can still walk and seek help on their own. Patients in the yellow triage also require immediate action, just not in critical condition, and last, patients in the red category are the first priority patients who need immediate help. Patients with these conditions will usually be placed in a special area, namely the resuscitation area.

The doctor and senior nurses are trying to bring the two men back to pconsciousness while we, who are still nursing students, can only try to calm the patient’s family. The woman crying and crying,” My son, my son” breaks our hearts. One of the men who looked like her husband could only hug the woman while whispering, “They must be safe..definitely safe”. We can’t see what happens in the triage room but I knew that the doctor and senior nurses are doing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) or something to make the patient back to consciousness.

But…

It’s too Late

both patients died

after the doctor said about the condition of the two patients, one word came out of a man, “This can’t be happening” followed by the sound of crying people. The woman who cried earlier back to cry, “My son!! He’s only 16, why ya Allah why?”

But this is not the point of the story. When we asked about the chronology of their drowning, one of the patient’s family said,” They helped a little girl who fell into the water” Our hearts were touched to hear it. Unknowingly we cry, and so do the doctor and senior nurses. The two patients were uncle and nephew. When the uncle threw the little girl into the hands of local people, the uncle was dragged away by the waves. His nephew wanted to save him but ended up drowning too. And surprisingly the uncle is a good swimmer. But we don’t know when death will come.

But I have one more important thing in my opinion. I don’t know if this is important for you or not but…

We saw the uncle’s index finger pointing as if he was pointing toward the sky.

I just want to say that everyone can be a hero and don’t worry to be a hero, because there is still much kindness to be done.
